Our word of the week on Wednesday was icosahedron. Here are two great examples of our work. We had a 20 minute time frame and everyone was trying very hard to use dot points that gave just the key idea. Mrs S added some clip art images to illustrate our writing. The images were collected from creative commons sources.
An icosahedron is a 3D shape. It has 20 faces, 30 edges and 12 vertices. All the faces are equilateral triangles. It is one of a group of shapes called Platonic solids. There are only four other Platonic solids.

Hi 4D/S
I love your word, icosohedron. Funnily enough we came across that word in our class this week too – and I can’t imagine it is that common a word! We have been looking at nets, and you can see a net for an icosohedron on our blog at http://middlehampri2.posterous.com
We’ve been making boxes for Christmas Cakes, and so your post on 3D shapes is most interesting for us. I love your windball! What a gorgeous shape and certainly one I have never seen before.

Thanks for visiting our blog, Mrs Monaghan. We have had great fun exploring 3D shapes. We have now made some Christmas trees that are stacks of square pyramids. Your Christmas cake boxes looked great.
