Word of the Week Number 1 for Term 1 2013

February 23, 2013 · 5 Comments · Maths

Here is our first word of the week for this year. We will be exploring lots of words during the year and have started out by looking at maths words.

There are many words we hear that have a special meaning when used during Mathematics. We could almost say there is a Maths Language just like there are other languages around the world such as Japanese, French, German and English.

The first word we have focused on is ADDEND. Please watch our Animoto to see all the spelling and vocabulary observations we made when talking about this special maths word.

Please leave a comment and share an observation of your own about the word ADDEND. Can you make some spelling connections to other words?

    Dear Mrs. S,

Thank you for supporting our learning by leaving a comment on our blog! Our students are just beginning to learn about blogging and you helped set an amazing example of how technology is letting us make connections around the world. They were so thrilled to hear from you!

This Word of the Week post is very interesting to me. Your Animoto reveals many different observations that can be made from looking at a single word. I think this strategy will help others to remember this word more completely. We think checking the root word “add” will help us easily connect what math operation this term applies to. I can’t wait to see what your next vocabulary term will be!

It was great to be able to leave a comment on your class blog about our weather. This is such a good way to be able to compare the weather and seasons around the world.

Thank you for adding an observation about the word addend. It is a word that we do not meet very often yet our classes do lots of adding.

    Hello Class and Readers,

Yeah we have been looking at lots of different mathematical words. I like discovering new words about mathematics because you are right it’s nearly a whole different language by it’s self!

Some of my explanations about the word addend are:
It’s a mathematical word, it’s a compound word, It’s a noun, It has 6 letters and it’s got two vowels and four consonants.

Some of my favourite mathematical words are: Value, acute angle, increase, division, add, minus, multiplication, histogram, input, graph and numerator.

Mathematics is a good subject but hard for most.
Mathematics isn’t my favourite subject but it’s not my least favourite neither.

An example for the word addend is:
    6+6=12 or 8+8=16

    What’s your favourite mathematical word?

    Kind Regards Sabastian

Thanks for leaving a great comment on this post, Sabastian.

I enjoyed reading your list of favourite mathematical words. One of my favourite mathematical words is fractal. The Sierpinski Triangle is a great example of a fractal. Did you see the Sierpinski triangle the grade 5′s and 6′s made last year? It was on the wall in our school library.

      regards
